Freelance journalist and editor, various locations
May 2011 to present
I pitch and write articles about a wide range of topics, with a specialty in health science and public policy related to it. Other frequent coverage areas include music, politics, drugs and addiction and the societal impact of technology. My work has appeared in the New York Times, the Washington Post, Slate, Vice, the Daily Beast, Men’s Health, Mental Floss, CityLab, the Financial Times, Inverse, the Village Voice and the websites of the Gizmodo Media Group.
I have participated in coverage of breaking national news for prominent outlets. I led the Daily Beast’s reportage of the 2018 Tree of Life tragedy, worked daily for the Washington Post in the first weeks of the 2020 Covid-19 shutdown, attended 2020 presidential campaign events for the Daily Beast and was the Washington Post’s person on the ground after the 2023 train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio.
I have written more than two dozen podcast scripts, mostly for the media company Law & Crime, and I guest on podcasts to discuss my work.
I write, edit and proofread materials for nonprofit, business and university clients, including Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh.
I work extensively in Google Drive and Microsoft Word and sometimes use Slack.
Fairfield County Weekly, Bridgeport/New Haven, CT
Managing Editor
August 2008 to May 2011
I oversaw all editorial content exclusive to Fairfield County Weekly, an alt-weekly that covered the Bridgeport, Stamford and Danbury areas of Connecticut, and managed its production schedule and editorial budget.
I was in charge of assignments for a small staff and a network of freelancers. I edited their work for spelling and grammar, factual accuracy and liveliness. I recruited writers to match the diversity of our coverage area.
I wrote many stories myself, often covering Bridgeport city politics, immigrant communities in Danbury and local music.
I collaborated to plan statewide coverage with two sister publications, New Haven Advocate and Hartford Advocate.
I created and co-hosted a weekly segment on Bridgeport’s WICC radio station.
I oversaw Fairfield County Weekly’s accounts on social media platforms.
Associate Editor
June 2007 to August 2008
I wrote arts, news and feature stories and was assigned editing and planning tasks.
Houston Press, Houston, TX
June 2006 to June 2007

I planned and edited an arts and entertainment section for Houston’s alt-weekly, managing freelancers, interns and staff contributors.
I also wrote a large portion of the section, interviewing locally, regionally and nationally known artists and performers.
